Worship for Remembrance Sunday led by Sue Clarke

John 3 v16

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

Nothing we can do will make God love us less: nothing we do can make Him love us more. He loves us unconditionally with an everlasting love.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.

Song: Enter in to His great love     84

Today is Remembrance Sunday. It is recognised as a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

We acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country and acknowledge our responsibility to work for the peace they fought hard to achieve.

Today, we remember those who sacrificed so we could live in freedom.

For the greatest love of all is a love that sacrifices all. And this great love is demonstrated when a person sacrifices his life for his friends.

John 15 v13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Jesus’ sacrifice was the act of dying on the cross to take on the sins of humanity and reconcile people with God.

We are here today to acknowledge and thank God for His amazing sacrifice for each and every one of us.

John 3 v16

For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but have eternal life.

Song: There is one Name     1038

Philippians 2 v9-10

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Hebrews 10 v19-23

Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,  by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body,  and since we have a great priest over the house of God,  let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

Song: Jesus, God’s righteousness revealed      1383

John 11 v25-26

I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.

Song: Thank You for the cross    1528

Ephesians 1 v3-8

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.  In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace  that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.

Message and Breaking of Bread – led by Lee Jerromes

Lee reflected on four passages of scripture where God’s people are called upon to REMEMBER.

  1. Deuteronomy 8: 1 -20, where the Israelites were called upon to remember the ways in which God had provided for all their needs as they had escaped from Egypt and then travelled through the deserts en route to the Promised Land. It’s good to remember God’s goodness, and to thank Hi of the om.
  2. Ecclesiastes 12: 1 – 7 – again a call for us to “Remember our creator”.
  3. Jeremiah 31: 31 – 34 – where in verse 34 God says “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more”. God doesn’t forget, but by his grace he won’t hold our sins against us. Ie  He will remember them NO MORE.
  4. 1 Corinthians 11: 23 – 26 – where Paul reminds his readers of the time when Jesus met with his disciples just before his crucifixion and instituted what we call the Lord’s Supper.  A time for followers of Jesus to remember Him in the bread and wine.

So we gladly follow this command today, and share in the bread and wine together, in grateful remembrance of the price which Jesus paid on the cross for our redemption.

Notices

Wednesday at 9.30am – Prayer Meeting

Next Sunday 17th November at 10.15am – our speaker will be Martin Shorey, the minister of Horley Baptist Church.

When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written: “‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
Matthew 2:4-6
