Notes of meeting Sunday 26 November 2023

Service led by Lee Jerromes.

The subject for the morning was the Names of Christ.

Ephesians 1: 15 – 23

15

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people,

16

I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.

17

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

18

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,

19

and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength

20

he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,

21

far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

22

And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,

23

which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

SONG: 782         How sweet the name of Jesus sounds

Lee gave the congregation each a piece of paper with a word which reflected some aspect of our Saviour – these to be shared later in the service.

At different times, we are all called by varying names – our first name (informal), Mr. xxxx (formal), maybe a shortened or nick-name, depending upon our relationship to the other person.

SONG: 870          Jesus is the name we honour

SONG: 877          Jesus, what a beautiful name

Jesus was called the Son of Man – recalling words in Daniel’s and other OT prophesies.

He was called the Lamb of God by John the Baptist.

He was called a Nazarene by some people, and as such was despised as being from Nazareth.

SONG: 298          Jesus, name above all names

In Matthew 1:21, Mary was told to name her babe Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins

SONG: 935          My Jesus, my Saviour

Sopng:1158        All my days I will sing this song of gladness

In Matthew 1: 23 we read of Immanuel , literally “God with us” – ie WITH us, and not against us.

SONG: 233          Emmanuel, God is with us

Jesus is also called the Holy One – incomparable perfection. Set apart – Holy – yet He walks with us on our life’s journeys.

He is also called the Word in John 1:1, and it is the work of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit to set us free.

Again, He is called Redeemer – taking our punishment, paying the price with just one sacrifice – and when He had completed the work we read several times in Hebrews that “He sat down ….. “ in heaven.

SONG:544           There is a Redeemer

The words “thank you O my Father” led us into remembering our Lord in the Breaking of Bread.

Because He is the Holy One, His sacrifice for us was accepted,

Philipians 2: 5 - 11

SONG: 32            At the name of Jesus  (sung today to the tune of Land of Hope and Glory)

Song:1404          King of kings, majesty

He is also a Rock on whom we can completely depend.

SONG: 543          There is a name I love to hear

(NOTE: My apologies to some whose contributions to the service did not get included in these summary notes)
