Notes of Meeting – 28th April 2024
The service was led by Lee Jerromes
NOTE: These notes are only a very brief synopsis of what Lee presented; time was also given for members of the congregation to contribute their thoughts on some of the passages of scripture that were studied.
Reading: Luke 24: 13 -27 which he described as the “longest bible study” in scripture – the account of Jesus journey with two disciples on the road to Emmaus, where He “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.”
Song: How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
The book of Exodus tells us how the role of PRIESTS developed – they were intermediaries between Man and God, serving God and dedicated. The job of a priest never ended, as sin never finished. The priests were a “type” of Christ, who would follow as the great High Priest.
Readings :Hebrews 4: 14 – 16 and Hebrews 6: 19 – 20 , speaking of Jesus as the High Priest.
Song: Jesus is King
Song: Before the throne of God above
The book of Exodus describes in detail the Passover sacrifice, where a lamb was sacrificed so that others might live. Jesus would have discussed with his disciples the image of the Lamb, as seen also in the following passages:
- John 1: 29 – 34 – where John the Baptist saw Jesus coming, and proclaimed “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”
- 1Corinthians 5: 6 – 8 – where v7 says “For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.”
- Revelation 5: 5 – 14 – where the Lamb is again pictured as the sacrifice for sin.
Song: I will sing of the Lamb
Readings: 1Peter 2:21 – 25 – speaking of Christ’s suffering for us, and Colossians 2: 11 – 15, where the Christ’s triumph over sin at the cross in emphasized.
Song: My Lord, what love is this
Song: Thank you for the cross
Breaking of Bread
Song: There is a redeemer
The theme of Christ as Priest is taken up in a number of passages in Hebrews (such as 6:20 to 7:3; 7: 23 – 28; 9:11 – 14; and 10:11 – 14 ). Also see Psalm 110: 1 & 4.
His was not an earthly priesthood – He came from the tribe of Judah rather than Levi.
Christ’s sacrifice was once for all – unlike the Levitical priests, His one sacrifice atoned for all sins for all time, so further sacrifices are not needed. See Hebrews 10: 1 – 4, and verses 11-18.
Song: In Christ alone
